New study shows that administering both CBD and Ketamine together can work as an anti-depressant.
According to the World Health Organization, by 2030, depression will be the leading cause of disability worldwide. With depression on the rise, we look to new studies for our fight against anxiety and depression.
More recently, the United States, slowly but surely, is accepting the potential for both cannabis and ketamine to treat profound ailments of depression.
The FDA recently added esketamine, a ketamine-like medication, as a prescribed treatment for depression. All over the US, clinics are offering ketamine treatments to patients. Ketamine's side effects, including “hyperlocomotion", can make it difficult to do much else when being treated with ketamine.
But what if you could minimize the adverse effects while preserving the therapeutic value?

Cannabidiol (CBD) and ketamine both work through the endocannabinoid system, but what impact does combining them have?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychostimulant compound from Cannabis sativa, which has shown anti-depressant effects without inducing hyperlocomotion. According to a recently published study, mixing cannabidiol, or CBD, with ketamine, makes it possible to receive the therapeutic value from ketamine without inducing its psychotomimetic effects.

CBD activates the AMPA receptors, similarly to ketamine, producing an anti-depressant-like effect. The cannabidiol not only prevents the hyperlocomotion caused by ketamine, but it does so without affecting its anti-depressant efficacy.
By administering ketamine and CBD to mice, both alone and in combination, the results from the study suggest that combining CBD and ketamine can be a valuable therapeutic approach for eliciting a desirable anti-depressant effect while possibly avoiding some of the side effects.
